Chapter

Eighteen

“Did you hear someone scream?” Hawk asked as a tremor ran down his spine.

They had reconvened and were jogging through the woods on their way back to the farmhouse after making some actual progress. Dylan had spotted what looked like an Audi parked beside a house northwest of the festival. With any luck, Hawk would be making a positive report to Roman later that night.

“I heard it,” Stryker said. “And…do I smell something too?”

“Yeah,” Dylan said, sniffing at the air. “It’s… Oh, shit.”

“Fire!” Stryker cried out. “The house is on fire!”

“Christ,” Hawk bristled. “Let’s go.”

They raced the last hundred yards, dodging trees and ducking under branches, then hit the clearing seconds later at a breakneck pace.

They rushed into the house, Hawk and Dylan practically tripping over each as they reached the door at the same time, then skidded to a stop.

The house wasn’t on fire, but the mouse hotel of a chair was fully engulfed in flames. There was a large, black scorch mark on the ceiling above it, and the paint was peeling.

Abby stood flattened against the wall—unharmed, thank God. But her eyes were wide, and it didn’t look like she was breathing.

In contrast, Stella stood against the opposite wall, looking triumphant, though her sleeves were smoking.

Ethan held his hands in the air. His face was tight with concentration.

“Hurry!” Stella said.

“She caught me off guard,” Ethan said. “Give me a second to conjure it.”

Thankfully, a second was all it took. Rain poured down from the blackened spot on the ceiling, right above the flaming chair.

Hawk was still trying to get his heart rate to settle when the last of the flames went out with a hiss, and steam rose from the waterlogged cushion.

“Do I want to ask?” Hawk asked. What was it with Stella and fire? She’d set a whole forest on fire several months prior and nearly died in the process.

“Your mate has magic,” Stella said smugly. “I knew it.”

Mate? Hawk thought, and Dylan and Stryker’s bodies went solid. It was one thing for them to be clued in to Abby. Now Stella was too?

“It was a bitch to pull it out of her,” Stella said, “but it’s in there.”

“Abby made that fire?” Dylan asked.

“She’s learning from the best,” Ethan said, shaking out his hands and flinging water droplets at the walls. “As you know, Stella is the queen of out-of-control infernos.”

“Not funny,” Stella groused, “but yes, I would say I taught her a few things.”

“Now that the ice is broken,” Ethan said, “we should be able to make quicker progress.”

Hawk, Dylan, Stryker, and even Abby just stared with open mouths at the two witches. How could they be so calm about this? Hawk was still caught up on the “mate” comment.

Stella approached Hawk while asking, “How about you three? Any progress?”

Hawk was about to answer when Abby pushed herself away from the wall.

“Don’t you dare take a step closer to them,” she warned, and her voice took on a steely quality Hawk had never heard before.

Stella stopped in her tracks, and a slow smile spread across her face.
